NASA is a government agency that deals with space programs, aeronautics as well as aerospace research. This US Government Space Agency headquarters is located in Washington D.C. NASA sends space shuttles and scientists into the outer space to study the solar system. With this brief introduction on the meaning of NASA let us move on to the Full Form of NASA.

World’s First Space Launch Mission

The Russians sent out the world’s very first artificial space satellite. Back then it was known as USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republicans). During the time period of the years 1957 & 1958 there was an international crisis better known as Sputnik Crisis. The Soviet Union launched the artificial satellite called Sputnik 1. The people of US felt they lagged behind in terms of technology as the Soviet Union was the space power. The ‘Sputnik Crisis’ led to the Space Race and the formation of NASA.

History of NASA Formation:

The NASA was established in the year 1958. Before this there was another federal agency that took care of the space matter for the country. This was called the NACA expanded National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The US Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 bill. This agency that focused only on space research was called the ‘National Aeronautics and Space Administration’ called NASA.

NASA Space Missions

Ever since NASA’s inception the government space agency has launched more than 100 successful manned flights. NASA completed several projects for Human Space Flight Programs. First NASA sent out the first man to space who returned safely. Then they sent the first man to walk on the surface of the moon.

Finally they went ahead to create Space Center in the Outer Space called the Space Station. Read on for more information on the very first three space projects by NASA.

  1. Project Mercury: NASA’s First Launch

NASA launched its first flight program was in the year 1959. The space project was to send and return a human being into the low earth orbit. This launch happened soon after the Sputnik 1 launch. They wanted to send the first before the Soviet Union. The Mercury Spacecraft was manufactured by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The launch took place at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. There were also eatables and liquids as well as the most essential gas for human existence – Oxygen. The project that sent half a dozen astronauts into space finally ended in 1963.

  1. Project Gemini: A Space Study

In the year 1961 National Aeronautics Space Administration started another space project called Project Gemini. NASA’s second project was aimed at developing space travelling techniques to land humans on the Moon. Project Gemini space flights were launched by the Gemini Titan II in Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Launch Complex 19. The next project utilized the techniques learnt from the Project Gemini. These included orbital maneuvers, extra vehicular activity and docking. The Gemini Project came to an end five years later in the year 1966.

  1. Project Apollo: The First Man to Walk on Moon

This was one of the major launches from NASA. This one was called Project Apollo. The specialty of this space launch was that the US Space Agency NASA to successfully land human on the moon. NASA achieved its goal in spite of losing three crew members during rehearsals. It was because of the Project Gemini that the Project Apollo was actually successful. They used Saturn Rockets for this launch project. The three versions were Saturn I, Saturn V, and Saturn IB.

The unfortunate fire accident that led to the death of the three astronauts in Command/Service Cabin was in 1967. However, on July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong the first man landed and walked on the moon successfully. Buzz Aldrin also landed on the moon’s surface. During the Project Apollo NASA successfully landed a dozen astronauts on the moon. This NASA Project that wrote history finally ended December in the year 1972.

SKYLAB: NASA Launched Space Station

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration created the first US Space Station. This was located right in the midst of space. The Saturn V Rocket helped in the launch of the Space Station called Skylab. There was a workshop where the scientists and astronauts did space study and research in space itself.

During this time through the Skylab NASA conducted many experiments and three manned missions within a year. The Skylab orbited our planet and took several pictures of the Earth which was used for studying the resources. One of the best findings during Skylab’s time 1973 to 1979 was coronal holes in the Sun. The Skylab Space Station Project finally ended when it entered Earth’s Atmosphere and disintegrated.

ASTP: Apollo Soyuz Test Project

Project ASTP marked the end of the cold war between the two nations of Soviet Union and United States of America. The Space Race finally ended between the two nations and they jointly conducted scientific experiments.

With this they collaborated together to form the World’s First International Space Station & Shuttle. This was known as the Mir Program. Several Joint Missions occurred following the Mir Program Mission. This finally gave way to the building of the International Space Station.

Space Shuttle Program:

This is the only Spacecraft in history to orbit the lower earth, exit and re-enter the atmosphere and land safely. This Shuttle Program proved re-usable launch vehicle technology too. Fourteen astronauts unfortunately lost their lives in two fatal mishaps after which the space agency has stopped space shuttles.

The NASA or National Aeronautics and Space Administration conduct competitions and holds workshops for students. They encourage students who are good in academics and awards internships and scholarships to students who want to pursue space studies.
